Got KitKat? Here's how to force immersive mode on apps and throughout the entire UI

Got KitKat? Here's how to force immersive mode on apps and throughout the entire UIImmersive mode is one of the coolest features that Android 4.4 KitKat brought to the table, perhaps even in the entire history of the OS. So cool, in fact, that we can't help but feel a little mad at Google for not implementing this sooner. It just makes too much sense!

If you feel like you're in the same boat, then you probably already know just how rare immersive apps still are. With the exception of a few gaming titles and some miscellaneous apps, pretty much everything is still stuck in the pre-KitKat era. If that bugs you as honestly as it does us, then today is your lucky day, for we'll be showing you how to force immersive mode on all your existing apps, and even throughout the entire UI of Android.

As always, while the procedure is dead easy, it still requires that your device is rooted in order to introduce such a major change to the default behavior of Android. That's just how the OS works. Fortunately, rooting your device today is pain-free, quick and completely reversible, and you don't really have to be a techie to do it. But enough talk, lets see what we can do to make your Android more immersive in the below slideshow.

How to force immersive mode on apps

Step #1

1. Step #1

Before we can get this nifty piece of code working, we'll need to have the almighty Xposed Framework installed. Developed by recognized developer, rovo89, it allows you to tweak away at your pleasure. You can download the .apk from here. It's best that you download it directly to your device, though nothing is stopping you from simply loading it on your phone through your computer in a way that you find most convenient.

2. Step #2

Once you install the Xposed Framework, you should just fire it up. Once inside, navigate to Framework and then click Install/Update as shown, and grant administrator permissions to the app when asked.

3. Step #3

It'll take seconds for the framework to install. Just hit 'Done' and reboot your device for the changes to take effect.
Step #3

4. Step #4

Once your device is powered back on, go into Xposed Installer again, and navigate to Download. Do a search for 'Immerse Me', and tap on the first and only result (as shown). Say thank you to the developerhere.

5. Step #5

Download the Immerse Me module and install it as shown on your left. Once that's done, navigate to Modules, and tick Immerse Me. This will prompt you to reboot (last time, promise). Go for it.
Step #5

6. Step #6

Aaand voilĂ ! You're ready to go roll now. Immersive mode is now forced on every app, and even on your UI. Whenever you need the status/navigation bars, just swipe up from the bottom, and they'll appear until they're no longer being used. It is an adjustment, but you should be able to get used to having more screen real estate quick enough.

If, at any time, you want to get rid of it, just go to the Xposed Installer, remove the tick on Immerse Me (in Modules), and reboot. You'll be back to normal.
